Platters - Main Street Mornington, Mornington Peninsula

My brother-in-law had his fiftieth birthday recently and decided he was going hire out most a small restaurant in Main Street Mornington. Nestled right in the heart of the Mornington Main Street shopping strip you will find Platters. This narrow but deep restaurant is shrouded by other eateries and has a number of dining areas. You can prop yourself on the pavement and watch the world go by, step just inside their bright and airy covered cafe or wonder right in for a quiet time. There is a bar, pleasant “arty” surrounds, a pitched glass roof allowing the sun in and bench seating.

On our evening the staff, who were extremely friendly and very efficient, had to handle our extended family of thirty-five. Drinks were served at the bar and there was a good range of beers, spirits and wines. As the evening progressed sumptuous platters of mixed meats, fish and semi-dried vegies, olives etc. were placed at our tables. These platters were so plentifully that most of them were not finished.  Platters by name and platters by trade, these were delicious and I could have picked at them all evening.

We had a selection of four different mains and all sounded and looked inviting. Unfortunately when it came to the steak and fish looks was where it stopped. Both were tasteless and of poor quality. This was in contrast to what was served on the platters.  About this time I wished I had finished one of the shared platters. The coffee went some way to healing the disappointment at the mains.

Parking is easy even if Main Street is full, there is plenty just off Mains Street. The ambience of the restaurant is OK but the premise is a little tied and needs a lift. Sit just inside or, if weather permits, on the street and share one of Platters platters and a wine.  Finish of the casual experience with one of their coffees and think about mains somewhere else.  Nice.
